Best Kept Secret (Post & Courier, Restaurant Guide 2006)
"I have persuaded a friend that he must try a Johnny's burger. The problem is, Johnny's is open only for lunch and the same days that my friend works (weekdays).
His lunch break is too short to make it to North Charleston and back in time, so the burger has eluded him for weeks. It is a shame, too, because it's a great one, something we've said elsewhere in these pages. For those of us with time for a leisurely weekday lunch, though, the trek to Montague Avenue is worth it. Many of the other rather pedestrian menu items are fairly average, but the cognoscenti know to stick to the tried-and-true. You'd never know it's there, tucked away near Park Circle, but we think more folks should sample Johnny's fare."

Best Deli (Post & Courier, Restaurant Guide 2006)
"Johnny's is the best spot for a weekday, lunchtime burger.
Johnny's Grill and Spirits is a subdued little spot in Park Circle neighborhood that serves up basic good eats hot off the grill. The service is fast and personal, and the burgers are literally the best in town. The menu offers the tasty "Johnny Melt," a chicken sandwich, and other things such as that. But we're always there for the burger.
French fries are of the skin-on wedge variety, something we generally dislike, but somehow these fill the bill nicely. They serve lunch only, and only on weekdays, so plan your trip accordingly."

Best N. Charleston Burger (The City Paper, 2006)
"On the peninsula, there is a ton of good burgers -- AC 's, Rue de Jean, Vickery 's, etc. In North Chuck, however, good food can be harder to come by. A good burger takes diligence to find. First you 've got to seek out and try the small joints, that could very easily suck. But there are some treasures in the northern lands. And Johnny 's on the main drag in Park Circle has a truly world-class burger. Grab yourself some sweet tea, watch Johnny sizzle up your sandwich, and dive in to the drippy, crispy, gooey, meaty celebration of life. It 's that good." --Scott Goodwin
